The One-and-a-Half Year Old

this month's photos

December 27, 2005

Second addendum to the plan. We still arrive on January 7 and Hava starts work on January 9 but our new home is now available on January 10 (hooray!). Of course the movers won't be arriving until some time later but we will appreciate having a home, furniture or not.

Simon, Hava AND Matthew drove to Sacramento on Saturday to celebrate the holidays with the Rubenson/Gonzalez families. Simon enjoyed having lots of people about - especially six-year-old Sarah who is just about the coolest cousin a boy could hope to have. After watching a DVD of her gymnastics performance, Simon spent twenty minutes entertaining the family by jumping up into the air and returning to the ground on his tush. He thought he was hysterical (really, he was) and he has been jumping ever since. Simon also appreciated being around the large dogs and he enjoyed playing with the "we wish you a merry Christmas" musical stuffed animals so much that certain adults were forced to leave the area.

We were home by 4 pm on Sunday and by 5 pm we were bored stiff; no one was available, it was raining, and all of our indoor entertainment options were closed. Somehow, we got through it and made it to Monday.

On Monday Simon spent time with Grandmother and Grandfather and then good friends Mike and Cindi. Simon was a bit of a handful Monday evening and, so far, his stellar mood hasn't improved. This evening he made two new friends, Tamal and Dawn, who did an excellent job of attempting to keep him friendly. The Teletubbies DVD has been watched more times in the past 24 hours than we are comfortable admitting but we remain sane and, really, Teletubbies and Diet Pepsi are fueling this move.

Goals accomplished: movers are ready, Chicago hotel reservation has been made, unneeded car has been claimed, unwanted furniture is gone, back patio looks fairly eden-like, many small items have been boxed, and the laundry closet wall has been painted.

Goals for this week: more packing, throwing away, and giving away followed by de-babyproofing the house.

First addendum to the plan. Matthew, Winslow, and Jill leave in the car on January 3 and arrive in Chicago on January 7. Joan (Hava's Mom) will drive to Mountain View on January 3 to help with Simon while the movers pack and move and then she, Simon, and Hava will vacate the premises for good the following day - returning to Sacramento until January 7 when Hava and Simon fly to Chicago to meet Matthew, Winslow, and Jill. This plan was put in place for several reasons: 1. We need a car in Chicago, 2. We have a boatload of stuff to take with us to keep Simon in the manner of which he has become accustomed for two weeks in a hotel (toys, books, stuffed friends, car seat, stroller, etc.), and 3. if avian flu is found in the United States (which Winslow's vet thinks is true or about to be true) no airline is going to allow Winslow aboard (so someone would have to drive anyway). Being separated for five days and traveling in a car for five days isn't ideal but we're going to make the best of it because we think it makes the most sense.

Now on to Simon ... Yesterday he spent time with his best friend, Calvin, and some of Calvin's new toys. When he saw the book and the backpack with the teletubbies he was star struck. He stared completely transfixed and held the items gently in his hands. Then, of course, there was the toddler tug-of-war over holding them. Mama is going to see if she can find a few small teletubbies items as Simon's Hanukkah gifts.

This morning we told Simon we needed to change his diaper. Simon said "No, not yet!" This afternoon Simon was "talking" on the phone and was heard to say "why?", "what?" and then "bye."

The couch is gone. The car is ready to be sold. Simon had his last day with Nancy (who, by the way, recently won the Ritz-Carlton Gingerbread House decorating competition in the professional category).

The packers will be here to get us ready on January 3 and the movers will take our things away on January 4. The tentative plan is for Matthew and his mother, Jill, and Winslow to leave in the Prius on their way to Chicago on January 3 leaving Hava and Simon to deal with the movers before leaving for her parents place in Sacramento for a few days. Hava and Simon will fly to Chicago on January 6 to meet Mattthew and Jill. Hava starts work on January 9. Our things will arrive around January 20; just as we take possession of our new house. Our current home goes on the market shortly after we leave.

What's new with Simon? We thought his final canine had made it though but we were faked out. It is really really close to breaking through but insists on being stubborn and staying put for the time being. Simon is talking a lot more these days; OK, that's not really true. Simon is speaking *in English* a lot more these days. He is also playing differently; showing his stuffed monkey how his toys work, trying to make everything fit into everything else, and making up little games with his toddler friends.

December 18, 2005

Simon had a great final non-holiday weekend in Mountain View. He started the weekend out right by attending his final swim class; both Mom AND Dad got in the water and he "swam" back and forth between them, under and over the water and through the air. That was, of course, before a small portion of his breakfast returned and we launched him out of the pool lickety split.

After a four hour nap, Simon had a dinner of teriaki salmon and rice at our local sushi joint with some friends and their baby, Alex. Then, completely unplanned, another friend and her parents stopped in and it was toddler heaven. The owner (who thinks Simon is just about the cutest thing alive) scooped him up and started a baby pow-wow complete with lollipops (here is the part where Simon gets his first taste of candy). Matthew didn't immediately want to ruin the moment so held back prying the lollipop from Simon's no-this-thing-is-never-going-to-leave-my-mouth grasp until the owner was out of eyeshot.

Sunday Simon spent time with Grandparents Kagle. Grandmother made him an adorable new sweater. We'll upload photos just as soon as we get near a high speed connection or come up with an overwhelming urge to spend a few hours watching bytes transfer across the phone line ONE AT A TIME. This evening we spent time with our friend Stan.

Goals for this week: ridding ourselves of the heaviest couch on earth without lifting more than a finger, selling Matthew's "I'm a single man" car, and setting a date with the movers.

Happy One-and-a-Half Years to Simon!

Today Simon had his final appointment with Dr. K. It was a pretty boring appointment. Simon is a normal, though unusually tall, healthy boy. He is in the 50th percentile for weight (nearly 26 lbs.) and the 95th percentile for height (nearly 35 inches).

Other new things for Simon: his two upper canines started to make their way through late last week (so no more new teeth for a long while). He learned how to say "hot hot hot" while patting the air at his friend Judith's house last week (in front of her fireplace) and he thinks it is an excellent joke - even in the middle of the night when he is supposed to be sleeping. Grammy taught him how to do somersaults (with some help). The walls in Simon's bedroom look exactly the way they did before Matthew painted them. Simon thought the new look was interesting but was more amused watching his stuff reenter the room in the arms of Mom and Dad.
