The Twenty-Two Month Old

this month's photos

May 11, 2006

The bags are packed, the schedule and boarding passes are printed, the new Caillou DVDs and way cool headphones have arrived, and Simon is asleep. Very early tomorrow morning we will be on a flight out to the Bay Area where we will see many of our good friends. Though we've certainly told him, Simon doesn't understand that we are going to be on a plane in the morning or that he has such an incredibly fun and full weekend planned. Tomorrow he will see the RLGers and a good friend of Matthew's. Saturday he will see CALVIN! as well as two of his other toddler buddies, he will meet a new friend, Lucie, who we haven't yet met out of the womb, and he will see our best neighbor *ever* and a spend time with a friend of Matthew's who bossed Matthew around back in the days of Oracle. Sunday we are off to San Francisco to play with Mike and Cindi and spend some quality time with Patrick before we are off to Oakland for the night and a visit with Amalia. Monday the men folk return to Chicago in the wee hours while Hava drives to Sacramento to attend the funeral of Grandma and Grandpa Rubenson. She flies back across the country just in time to pass out for a few hours before waking up to Matthew's birthday and (very unfortunately) another long Libertyville Tuesday.

We will probably not have time to update the website this weekend but, more than likely, we'll be updating the photos (link available at the top of this page). Remember, you don't actually have to sign in to see the photos - sometimes the Kodak page is designed to make you think you do.

Have a nice weekend!

Most overused Simonial phrase: "Whas sat?" (Uttered at least 500 times every day.)

We've got several updates today...

French

Last Saturday we three Kagles went to a make-up class at Simon's French Program. Matthew regularly reports on Simon's French accomplishments but Hava was able to see for herself how Simon has made himself the star of the class. He knows the routine and grabs the different sacks of props for the teacher. He enthusiastically responds to the teacher's commands. But what is most amazing is that he actually speaks and understands French! We initially were not so sure about the expense; would it be worthwhile? Now we're convinced and have signed Simon up for the next session and plan to continue supporting his Francophile habit far into the future. In fact, when Matthew called to renew, all of the staff knew of Simon - he's a popular little fellow.

The Mystery of the Throbbing Toe

Saturday night Hava and Matthew went out on the town and came back when Simon was asleep. Unfortunately he woke up around 10:30 pm SCREAMING and wouldn't calm down. It wasn't until we noticed that his big right toenail was blue (and he wailed when Matthew tried to put his socks on) that we had a clue as to the source of the problem. By that time we had spent most of the night awake. Medicated Simon crawled into bed with Mama and woke her up by cradling her face in his hands and planting a kiss on her lips. It was the sweetest way he could possibly say "Thank you, Mama. I feel better now."

So where is a podiatrist when you need one? Fortunately, for us, just a call away. Grandma Whee was sent a picture of the affected toe to determine the seriousness of the problem. It wasn't that serious and by Monday he wanted to know why he had a black toe - something we aren't actually able to answer - but he felt fine.

Without a Daddy

Monday Simon allowed Matthew a five minute workout before he cried so hard the attendant called Matthew back to the kid's area. (Here is where we start to worry about leaving Simon at preschool next month.)

The Growing Brain

Simon's languages continue to develop. His stories are becoming more entertaining (since we kind of sort of understand what he is talking about). Hava got a twenty minute instruction on the different kinds of doors and keys the other day. Matthew learned about all the different things that can be on the bus and what sounds they make (the Mamas on the bus say "I love you" while the Daddys on the bus say "Daddy Da Da"). This afternoon Matthew asked him if he wanted to go outside even though it was overcast; Simon sighed and said "I don't know."

We were playing some of Simon's favorite tunes in the car the other day when we heard a toddler version of "Almost" coming from the back seat of the car: "I almost got drunk at school at fourteen where I almost made out with the homecoming queen who almost went on to be Miss Texas but lost to a slut with much bigger breast-es." We stared at each other in disbelief the first time it happened but, with each song, Simon sang (only a few of the words are really clear but he has the cadence and usually the sound of the first letter of the words correct). We're conflicted about nurturing his love of music versus having him repeat words he probably shouldn't know. Neither of us are big on censorship. We tried playing some Disney tunes to balance out the adult content - "NO NO NO!" cried Simon. Now we're working on taking turns with music so we don't have to listen to the same songs over and over (although the singing is incredibly cute) and we'll slowly introduce some songs with better lyrics (promise).

Hava spent the morning with Bono. This Bono and this Bono but certainly not this Bono (who is, in fact, dead). They arrived at work together, shared an elevator, and shared the right side of the office for at least an hour before he moved on to other things. Unfortunately, all the way up to the 26th floor Hava had the sinking feeling that she was supposed to know who he was and if she were slightly more cool she would know (really, without the outfit and the entourage, she wouldn't have noticed at all). It was her much cooler coworkers who tipped her off to the news. Hava's thoughts pretty much immediately turned to laundry and how she wished she had done that midweek load.

Simon, of course, did not see Bono. If Simon had seen Bono we are pretty sure he would have said "Oh Wow!" not only because Bono is worth saying "Oh Wow!" about but because he pretty much says "Oh Wow!" about everything.

Simon says: Happy Belated Birthday, Amanda!

We didn't write anything yesterday because we were too shocked at the news about RLG. (Just in case the spin makes it sound like good news, just know that it really isn't.) We wish all our RLG friends well and look forward to seeing them next week on our quick trip to California.

In other news, Simon's reluctance to let us leave ended as quickly as it began. He now shouts "bye!" as we walk out the door. And when Daddy returned from work this afternoon, Simon turned to him and asked for "seep?" After being put to bed he napped for four hours. Four hour naps are not uncommon for Simon but actually asking for a nap is shocking.

In other, potentially ground breaking events, Simon is happy to spend lots of time sitting naked on the toilet but, so far, no more pee pee has appeared. He will, however, pee into the basin of his potty while standing (if Mama holds it for him). Potty training, so far, has been an exercise of our patience: Just how long CAN he sit there? Perhaps, for his birthday next month, we'll order him a magazine subscription.

It has been a rainy weekend. We would have liked to spend Sunday afternoon in the Park but we figured the second best things was to SEE Sunday Afternoon in the park...

April 29, 2006

Last night we started our new Friday routine by taking a very cranky Simon to evening "Family Swim" at the YMCA. He hasn't been swimming in a while; mostly because we were waiting for him to start a new class (which he couldn't get into because the Y doesn't have many spots and they fill up very quickly). Once we thought about that we realized how ridiculous it was to take him to a class anyway. Simon is thrilled to be in the pool; to "swim" back and forth between Mama and Daddy; to jump off the side of the pool after the count of three; to be thrown into the air and splash back down into the water. He doesn't need a teacher. So every Friday night from now on we will attempt to drag ourselves to the Y and make the boy very happy.

Today was haircut day. We dread haircut day. The last time we had haircut day he cried and screaming and writhed and pulled at Mama. He was being tortured. The cut took what seemed like forever and, in the end, it looked terrible. Today, however, was different. We tried a second kids haircut place (across the street from the first) and we explained that he is a bit of a screamer when it comes to the removal of his hair. She started him off with a lollipop and an Elmo video and was so caring and gentle that he was the perfect little gentleman the entire time. What do we know? This is when tipping is a delightful practice.

Phone cameras are great.

Because Mama and Daddy were also having their hair done today (leaving not much time for anything else), it is raining, and we had an entire bar of 99% pure chocolate from Scharffen Berger just wasting away in the cabinet, we decided to make a cake. Simon was given his own bowl with his own flour, sugar and water and Mama promised to clean the mess no matter what happened...

Watch Netflix or post to Simon's blog? Choices, choices. We're taking the easy way out. Here is Simon this evening.

Not much new anyway. Simon pees. Simon speaks in English. Yada yada. Off to TV land...

(P.S. You may have to try a couple of times to view the video before it works.)

April 22, 2006

Let it be known that twenty-two months and six days after his birth Simon Lucas Kagle went pee pee on the potty.

Let's all pause and appreciate that fact.

----

Something is going on in the Simonial brain. Two weeks prior to this past week, Simon was regularly sleeping from 8 pm to 7 am and taking four hour naps without complaint. This past week he hasn't been willing to take a nap or go to bed at night (although he eventually does both). And, after months of not caring that Mama and Daddy were leaving him with a sitter or at the gym playroom, this past week Simon has refused to allow Mama and Daddy to leave him alone for any length of time without crying and clinging to whatever bits he can grab. Tonight Mama and Daddy did manage to make it out for Heaven on Seven. And although we imagine he had a great time playing with his hosts, Simon wanted Mama to hold him for a good half hour after she returned. While they held each other (and a ball, a book, and a puzzle piece) they sang one of Simon's new favorites songs: "Happy Birthday." Mama even trained him to yell "two!" every time she asks "How old are you now?"

April 21, 2006

Simon has spent a lot of time at the park across the street lately. Tonight a man brought his puppy. Matthew took out his Moto RAZR...

We finally figured out what Simon yells when he climbs to the top of the jungle gym: "LET ME DRIVE THE BUS!!!!" (So says the pigeon to the bus driver in one of his favorite books.) Simon said four new French words today (three in class), managed to speak clearly enough for Mama to hear "LET ME DO IT" and, later, said "bird sad because bus" after we read him that same book (the bird isn't allowed to drive the bus). We are now certain that Simon is, at least occasionally, speaking English.

April 17, 2006

It's a big day for the mini-K. We've confirmed that he has been accepted to preschool for Summer and Fall AND today is his first day in big-boy diapers.

Feel-n-Learn diapers are pull-ups (similar to underpants in their design) which are constructed to *intentionally* not work as well as regular diapers. It is somewhat amusing that we are now paying more for less functionality but wouldn't it be nice if these new uncomfortable-when-wet diapers cause Simon to ask to be changed? He likes the toilet, he wants to use the toilet, he just hasn't connected the dots to bring him to the realization that diapers might not necessarily be the place where he should hold urine for all eternity. In case you haven't spent much time with the modern diaper, you might not know that they work REALLY REALLY well. So well that unless you dumped an entire jar of cold pickle juice down your pants, you might never realize you even needed a change (and then you might only notice a funny smell). So begins this Simonial diaper experiment (sans the pickle juice).

Addendum: All of this potty training paraphernalia is great but we imagine it will be the toddler-sized toilets with toddler-height sinks at his new preschool which will be the real stimulus to turn Simon to the toilet once and for all. He prefers the toilet to the potty only his tush is still a might bit too small. We also feel abilged to mention that neither of us actually minds changing Simon's diaper (he has been relatively pleasant about being on the changing table lately) and we wouldn't have even started on this potty-training journey had Simon not initiated it with his vocal desire to use the toilet.

Happy Twenty-Two Months to Simon!

Grandma Whee has come from New York for a Simonial interlude so we waited until this evening to celebrate Passover. We were lucky enough to have a few friends stop by. Cathy brought chocolate toffee matzo which is just about the best excuse ever to eat unleavened bread for an entire week. (Hava is quite disturbed that, in all these years, none of the Kagles ever even hinted at the prospect of covering matzo with chocolate.) Simon's friend Amelie came over to play just as the meal was finishing up; we ate and played all evening long.
